The most current Android version is **Android 17**. Google released it on June 16, 2026 for Pixel phones from the Pixel 6 onward, and Samsung started delivering it as One UI 9 on September 16, 2026\. Other manufacturers are rolling it out in stages, so your phone may still be on Android 16 or earlier even though Android 17 is out.

## What is the most current Android version right now?

As of October 2026, the newest stable release is Android 17, codenamed "Cinnamon Bun" inside Google. It follows Android 16 (June 2025) and Android 15 (October 2024). Google no longer uses dessert names publicly, so it's simply called Android 17.

## What's new in the most current version?

Android 17 polishes the look introduced with Android 16's Material 3 Expressive update and focuses on everyday convenience and privacy:

- Frosted-glass blur effects on panels like the volume slider and power menu
- An optional split shade with notifications on one side and Quick Settings on the other
- Floating bubbles for more apps, not just chat apps
- An improved desktop mode when you connect to a monitor
- A contacts picker and a new permission for scanning your local network
- Apps that can no longer block rotation or resizing on tablets and foldables

## Which phones have the most current version?

- **Google Pixel:** Pixel 6 and every newer Pixel. For the Pixel 6 series, it's the final major upgrade.
- **Samsung Galaxy:** One UI 9 began with the Galaxy S26 and has reached the S25 and S24 families and recent foldables in many regions, with more models to follow.
- **Other brands:** rollouts happen on each manufacturer's own schedule, usually starting with their newest flagships.

## How are Android versions named and released?

Android versions up to Android 9 had public dessert names like Marshmallow, Oreo and Pie. From Android 10 onward, Google uses only numbers in public, though it still assigns internal codenames. Since Android 16, major versions arrive in the second quarter of each year, followed by quarterly platform releases (QPRs) that add features and monthly security patches.

## How can I check which Android version my phone has?

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap **About phone**. On Samsung phones, tap **Software information** next.
3. Look for **Android version**. Tap it to see the security update date as well.

To check for an update, go to Settings > System > Software updates on a Pixel, or Settings > Software update on a Galaxy.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Will all Android phones get Android 17?

No. Only phones still within their manufacturer's support window will receive it.

### How long does it take manufacturers to release it?

Pixels got it on day one. Samsung started about three months later, and other brands typically take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.

### Is my phone outdated if it isn't on Android 17?

Not necessarily. What matters most is whether it still receives recent security patches. Check the security update date under Settings > About phone.
