Android 15 Release Date, Supported Phones and Key Features

Android 15 was released on October 15, 2024, when Google began rolling the stable version out to Pixel phones. Google had published the Android 15 source code to the Android Open Source Project a little earlier, on September 3, 2024. Since then Android 15 has been followed by Android 16 (June 2025) and Android 17 (June 2026), so it's now two versions behind the latest release.

When did Android 15 come out?

Android 15's journey started with developer previews in February 2024, followed by public betas from April. After the source code landed in AOSP on September 3, the stable update reached Pixels on October 15, 2024. That made Android 15 the last major version to follow Google's old autumn schedule; starting with Android 16, Google moved its major releases to the second quarter of the year.

Internally, Android 15 was codenamed "Vanilla Ice Cream" and uses API level 35.

Which phones got Android 15?

On Pixel, Android 15 reached the Pixel 6 and newer, including the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 and 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8 and 8a, the Pixel 9 family and the Pixel Tablet. The Pixel 9 series had launched in August 2024 on Android 14 and received Android 15 as an update.

Samsung delivered Android 15 as One UI 7. It debuted on the Galaxy S25 series in early 2025, and the rollout to older flagships such as the Galaxy S24 began in April 2025 before expanding to foldables, tablets and Galaxy A models. Other brands, including OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola and Oppo, updated their recent phones between late 2024 and mid-2025.

What did Android 15 bring?

  • Private space: a separate, lockable area for apps you want to hide or keep isolated.
  • Partial screen sharing: share or record a single app instead of your whole screen.
  • Theft protection: Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock help secure a stolen phone, many of them delivered through Google Play services to older versions too.
  • App archiving: remove an app's data-heavy parts while keeping its icon and your data, so you can restore it later.
  • Satellite messaging support: the system can show satellite connectivity and support messaging apps over satellite on capable phones.
  • Edge-to-edge apps: apps targeting Android 15 draw behind the status and navigation bars for a more immersive look.

How is Android 15 different from Android 14?

Android 14 focused on lock screen customization, photo privacy and accessibility. Android 15 put more weight on privacy and security, with Private space and the new theft protections, and made apps look more modern by enforcing edge-to-edge layouts. It didn't redesign the interface; the bigger visual change came later with Android 16's Material 3 Expressive update.

Should I still update to Android 15?

If your phone offers Android 15 but nothing newer, yes. It includes important security improvements. If your phone can install Android 16 or 17, you'll get those fixes and more by going straight to the newest version available. To check, open Settings > System > Software updates on a Pixel, or Settings > Software update on a Samsung Galaxy.
